On-Grid vs Off-Grid vs Hybrid Solar: Which Makes Sense for Bangalore?
For most Bangalore homes and businesses, a grid-connected on-grid system is the most cost-effective choice because it qualifies for BESCOM net metering and the PM Surya Ghar subsidy, while a hybrid system adds battery backup for households that also want power during outages.
On-grid
An on-grid system has no batteries. It offsets your daytime consumption and exports the surplus for net metering credits, which makes it the cheapest option per kW and the fastest to pay back. The trade-off is that it shuts down during a grid outage, because feeding power into a dead line would be unsafe for line workers.
Hybrid
A hybrid system keeps the net metering benefit and adds a battery, so essential circuits stay live through an outage. Batteries add meaningful cost and have a shorter service life than panels, so size the battery for the loads you actually need during a cut, not for the whole house.
Off-grid
An off-grid system has no grid connection at all and relies entirely on batteries. In Bangalore, where BESCOM supply is broadly reliable, off-grid rarely makes financial sense and forfeits both net metering and the subsidy. It suits remote sites, farm installations, and locations without a practical grid connection.
